PRESS RELEASE: PHILIPPINE ALLIANCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATES

Quezon City, Philippines – September 7, 2024 – The Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) successfully convened youth organizations for the official launch of its new project, "Youth Empowerment for Good Governance, Human Dignity, and Human Rights." The initiative aims to strengthen youth involvement in shaping policy reforms that uphold human rights across the country.

The hybrid event, held both in person and online at Street Kohi Community Café in Quezon City, marks a significant step in continuing PAHRA’s efforts from last year’s Youth Emerge Initiative. With a focus on mobilizing young leaders, the project seeks to reclaim accurate human rights narratives and drive meaningful governance reforms at both local and national levels.

Rommel Yamzon, PAHRA’s Secretary-General, expressed optimism about the youth’s potential to drive change. “PAHRA recognizes the transformative power of today's youth, who refuse to be deceived by false narratives of passivity and selfishness. Woke and engaged, they are actively seeking platforms for meaningful advocacy. That is why PAHRA is providing a space for collaboration and unity, empowering young people to drive the change they want. The project aims to mobilize the youth for a rights-based governance, advancing the welfare of the marginalized,”

Yamzon emphasized that the project goes beyond immediate actions, focusing on building a sustainable movement. He stressed the importance of ongoing involvement, urging youth leaders to engage local governments and community organizations to achieve meaningful and strategic reforms.

Yamzon added, “There are even bigger things to come. The youth network we have gathered will be actively involved in lobbying and working with local governments to pass rights-based ordinances and resolutions. They will also be launching campaigns centered around the youth human rights agenda and, later this year, hosting a human rights festival,”

PAHRA encourages all young people to take an active role in this important effort to advance human rights. Whether you join the campaign or collaborate on future initiatives, everyone is warmly welcome to be part of this movement!
